A girl group competition show from South Korea is sparking backlash due to the young age of its participants.

The series, titled Under 15, sees girls as young as eight and nine competing to be in a K-pop group.

During the casting process, producers were seeking out girls as young as three to compete.

After the cast was officially revealed on social media, K-pop fans expressed outrage over the age of the participants.

'Advertising this as 'Under 15' so the predators can tune in. Sickening,' wrote one.

'That is unacceptable. Disturbing,' wrote another. 'The people making this, watching this, and allowing their children to be on this should all be arrested.'

A third added, 'Who the fk said this is a good idea???!! All the girls are under 15 and they are literally still children??!!! Stop this bullst!'

Under 15 is also causing an uproar locally back in Korea, with many locals threatening to boycott the series.

'What were their mothers doing? Watching this and doing nothing? Minors need to be protected by their mothers,' one Korean wrote (translated by Netizen Buzz).

'Kids should be in school studying and playing with friends, not dancing and singing adult songs,' wrote another.

The backlash has already caused Crea Studio, the company behind the series, to disable all comments on their social media channels.

Disturbing teasers for the series depict the contestants dancing and doing the splits to a song by rapper Megan Thee Stallion.

Several girls have pigtails, while another is dressed in a schoolgirl skirt.

In another video, the girls are shown having their hair and makeup done before posing on the set of a photoshoot.

Some of them are dressed in midriffs, crop tops, and short skirts.

Under 15's female showrunner Seo Hye Jin is one of the most successful producers in the South Korean entertainment industry.

'Perhaps viewers are now looking for untainted talents, as the world becomes more complex and difficult to navigate.'

She also previously said that she hopes to create a girl group similar to K-pop sensations NewJeans and Blackpink.

'I dream of creating a group like Blackpink with minors,' she said last year, according to Allkpop.

'I envision a girl group consisting of four to five young members. The same old girl group formula just doesn't work anymore,' she added.
